10 THINGS I WISH I KNEW WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE

Let’s face it—each new stage in life brings dramatic changes that are difficult to anticipate. No matter how smart you can be in college, you will still get surprised by the working world. I faced these surprises myself. I thought the working world would be a cup of cake since it had the freedom I lacked at SD College, Chandigarh. I WAS WRONG. These are some facts of life I realized a little too late.
1. The size of your muscles doesn’t matter in the real world. In college it was a big asset and the girls used to moon at them. Instead spend time developing interpersonal skills which will go a long way in making your life happy and successful.
2. Don’t complain. Maybe venting makes you feel better, but it will also make people around you uneasy. Nobody is interested in your miseries; they have enough of their own. So smile and make merry, also a secret to gain quick popularity.
3. Don’t worry! Whatever has to happen will happen and worrying will not solve anything. I read this quote in a 2 Rs newspaper but the quote is worth millions.
4. You look good. There’s no such thing as the hottest person in the room. Everyone is attracted to something different, be yourself and steal the show ... smile and smile a lot, for you never know who is falling in love with your smile.
5. Keep it to yourself. “She seems nice” is an excellent thing to say about someone you don’t like. Particularly in the company of people you don’t know and that’s how this world is. Sooner you learn this lesson happier you will be.
6. Let your passion shape your profession. You know that thing your dad said? “If work wasn’t hard, they wouldn’t pay you to do It.” before I had dismissed it with a smirk but now I realize how true it is.
7. Enjoy small things in life. If you haven’t realized this than probably you would understand after you enlist in army. It’s about the small joys. For me, that means playing volleyball in evenings or relaxing with friends and family on weekends.
8. When in doubt, shut up. Silence is a smart tactic, the best option when you’re processing how to respond and what to say, rather than muttering nonsense and make a fool of yourself. Believe me it will save you the embarrassment.
9. The university and college degrees miserably fail you when you step into the domain outside the protective layer of your house to search for a job. Its your soft skills and hardwork that counts. This world seems to follow just one thumb rule “perform or perish".
10. The good guys will not always win and bad guys will not always be behind bars. Infact at times you will see it’s vice versa. It will happen that you will be the best man for the job and still not get it. But that’s life and you have to take it in your stride and move on.
P.S Last but not the least. Brush your teeth every night before going to sleep. The single most painful episode of my life can be described in two words- root canal treatment. It’s also the result of not listening to my mother.
